Dear Friends and Family,
I trust that everyone had a good Super Bowl Sunday. Some of us enjoyed watching the game (although it was not the most exciting), others enjoyed the food and drink, and still others the halftime show. After 60 years, the Super Bowl has become one of America’s modern favorite pastimes. It is a major social and cultural event that celebrates sport and entertainment, and it provides another reason for us to gather and celebrate.
I enjoy putting together the talks for this event because it always teaches me something. Paul “Bear” Bryant is famously credited with the quote, “Offense sells tickets. Defense wins championships”. I think this year, it has really hit me how true this is in life. In my younger years, my objective was to gain yardage and gain the excitement of the daily/weekly/monthly or annual goals.
Progress on offense demands creativity, vision, and decisive action, as well as a willingness to take risks and experiment with new ideas. That is where I love to be, and yet we are not always on the offensive side.
Age and experience have taught me that Defense is certainly going to be the saving grace for the big wins in life. Defense is about noticing what you are noticing, setting and protecting your boundaries, protecting your energy, guarding your mind, practicing stillness, and choosing peace. Right now, this year at this time, my role is to play better defense in this thing called Life. Are you good on the defensive side of life, or would a little more practice help you win your championship game? One thing to consider is to take Rev Cheryl’s upcoming 40-day Meditation class. I hope to see you there.
Peace and Blessings,
Rev. Staci
